I Love Teaching!
There is nothing as rewarding as seeing a student's eyes light up when they've learned a new piece, or mastered a difficult concept. The main focus of my studio is for students to receive a well rounded education, giving them the tools necessary to learn, understand, and perform pieces of literature.
The confidence and discipline that students develop through piano study is invaluable and critical to all kinds of learning. These, alone, are skills that will last a lifetime! (Please see my "Benefits of Music Study", and "Piano and the Brain" pages and related articles.)
Through traditional piano, I teach students all the fundamentals from the very beginning: note reading, rhythm reading, finger technique, music theory, stage presence, and interpretation of literature.
I have written three music theory workbooks, which I incorporate into lesson plans, along with a vast library of supplemental materials - including literature with CDs, extra music theory handouts, duets, and holiday music.
In addition to these traditional materials, I love coming up with innovative teaching methods and incorporating newer technologies into lessons. The studio has a dedicated iPad, computer, white board, and large floor keyboard (a la the film," Big") which students use in conjunction with supplemental materials during lessons.
Performances
At the end of the first semester, all the students are invited for a Performance Class/Workshop, where we discuss the art of performance. (What makes us so nervous? Is that a good or a bad thing? How can we control nerves? ) After the discussion, students learn to breathe properly, how to bow, and how to listen. In a practice recital, students perform pieces for each other in preparation of the final, end of the year recital.
Afterward, students are rewarded with a party and a movie!
At the end of the year, I hold a public recital where students perform for their family and friends and awards are presented
